This module focuses exclusively on the application of a research-based framework on cognition and learning, as described in Dimensions of Learning. This module demonstrates how teachers could improve the quality of teaching-learning processes in any content area, by applying key principles of Dimensions of Thinking (note: "Thinking is the highest form of Learning"). This module would help every teacher to a) maintain focus on learning (thinking); b) study and better understand the learning process; and c) plan curriculum, instruction, and assessment that considers the five critical aspects of learning (thinking)
At the end of this module, the student will be able to do the following:
1. Identify key principles of learning that directly or indirectly relate to higher-quality teaching practices.
2. Recognize that learning involves a complex system of interactive processes that includes five types of thinking - represented by the five dimensions of learning/thinking.
3. Align lesson planning and execution of the same with the complex system of interactive processes that includes the five types of thinking advocated through the five dimensions of learning.
4. Recognize and implement lessons that systematically include the teaching of attitudes, perceptions, and mental habits that facilitate learning.
5. Prepare and implement lessons that are both teachers directed as well as student-directed.
6. Critically observe and evaluate other teachers’ teaching practices in the context of the five dimensions of
learning/thinking, and coach fellow teachers in the arts and science of effective DOL/DOT implementation (DOL
= Dimensions of Learning / DOT = Dimensions of Thinking).
This module focuses on enhancing student teachers’ capacity
to understand and plan for active learning in classrooms. This module will
address class management; developing a community of learners (e.g. group work;
cognitive strategy instruction) approaches to learning (cognitive and
socio-cultural theories); and literacy across the curriculum. It would also
address effective teaching and learning including active learning,
constructivism, multiple intelligences, teaching and learning styles, classroom
planning, interaction, differentiation, and assessment.
