The module comprises an overview of the various schools of thought pertinent to the field of education. It includes an analysis of the assumptions, aims, and practices of major philosophies that influenced education followed by a survey of 20th-century (and beyond) movements in educational theorizing. These philosophies are compared, contrasted, and evaluated against various approaches to the theory and practice of education. Learners will work out a personal approach to the theory and practice of education in light of comprehensive understanding and in-depth reflection of their own personal beliefs, teaching styles, and perspectives.
The learner completing this module will:
Increase self-awareness or self-understanding by articulating a personal yet comprehensive perspective that
will guide individual educational theorizing and practice and by uncovering with empathy and respect for others
the root perspective of various philosophies and theories of education.
Identify philosophical concepts such as metaphysics, epistemology, and axiology as analytical/evaluative tools for educational theorizing and practice, to uncover personal philosophical assumptions and to develop a critique of those assumptions based on a personal perspective.
Construct a philosophical framework that will help to recognize and understand the various conflicting ideas surrounding various educational practices and theories as well as the overall goals of education.
Understand more fully the principles of teaching and learning by tracing the historical, and philosophical roots of important contemporary theories and practices of teaching and learning, to recognize the complexities of the issues, and to make informed choices of the most appropriate methodologies to facilitate teaching and learning.
Reflect in writing, speaking, and experiences, the meaning and significance of serving others in the context of
the discipline of education.
The objective of this module is to facilitate the learner in
becoming a reflective practitioner. Furthermore:
1. To introduce students to the broad philosophical ideas of
education in classical times and to review the reception of these ideas for
today’s classroom, such as idealism, realism, Neo-Scholasticism, perennialism,
essentialism, futurism, re-constructionism, existentialism, humanism,
pragmatism, progressivism, and behaviorism.
2. To help students to understand how education has evolved
and developed over the years beginning from the 19th-century industrial
revolution era up until today’s scientific and information technological era.
