What do we mean by 'wellbeing' for young people? How is it shaped by social differences and inequalities, and how can we improve young people's mental and physical health? This module, 'Young people's wellbeing', will examine the range of factors affecting young people's wellbeing, such as obesity, binge drinking, depression and behavioural problems.
After studying
this course, you should be able to:
· Demonstrate an awareness of current media
and policy discourses surrounding young people's physical and mental health.
· Critically analyse ideas about young
people's wellbeing using a range of theoretical perspectives.
· Demonstrate an understanding of some of the
ways in which young people's experience of mental health is shaped by diversity
and inequality.
· Demonstrate an awareness of different
approaches to promoting young people's wellbeing.
This course will analyse some of the ways in which young
people's wellbeing has been represented in media and policy discussions. You will
explore current construction of young people's ‘wellbeing’ and will be presented
an alternative critical, social framework for thinking about the health of
young people. This module focuses on the ways in which class, gender and
ethnicity helps to shape young people's mental health. Finally, you will learn
ways in which young people's wellbeing can be promoted by attempting to move
beyond a focus on individual resilience to examine the wider social and
structural processes that might improve the health and wellbeing of all young people.
